Bharat Natyam is one of oldest devotional classical Indian dance forms. Mrs. Asha Gopal founded the Arathi School of India Dances in 1981. Since then it has grown phenomenally and classes are held in multiple locations such as Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas. With the dedication and expert guidance of Mrs. Gopal the school has produced many dance dramas with various themes to celebrate and emphasize the cultural and social issues. Classes are offered to all age groups with young students starting as early as 5 years. The intense and rigorous training not only enforces self discipline and physical well being it also brings in a spiritual happiness and peace to life. After 7 years of learning the students celebrate their graduation from the school with a special ceremony called "Arangetram". Till date, more than 70 students have graduated from Arathi School of Dance. Mrs. Gopal invites many renowned guest artists from India various times of the year to offer many workshops and seminars in various classical Indian art forms. The workshops are usually offered during summer in Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, and Kathak. In addition the school participates in various festivals and programs organized by different cultural and charitable organizations in Arizona and Nevada. The Arathi School of India Dances was featured in the French Opera "Lakme" produced by the Arizona Opera company. Collaborations with artists from the U.S., Japan, France and Mexico have resulted in innovative dance productions choreographed and presentd by the Arathi School. The school continues to explore new avenues of expressions of art while preserving the authenticity of Indian classical dance forms. |
